“The February-born shall find
Sincerity and peace of mind,
Freedom from passion and from care,
If they an amethyst will wear.”
Amethyst is actually a mineral and is a violet variety of quartz very popular in jewellery.
Amethyst has a unique, seductive colour which ranges from the lightest pink to the deepest purples. The colour comes from iron impurities. Secondary hues of red and blue also exist and the much rarer green amethyst.
Historically amethyst was worn for protection during battle for its healing properties. It is also said to sharpen intellect and keep the wearer cool-headed.
The ancient Greeks and Romans believed amethyst protects its owner from drunkenness and they made drinking cups out of it in the belief it would prevent intoxication!
Sadly amethyst has lost most of its value and is no longer regarded a cardinal gemstone. This is quite ironic as amethyst is extremely popular in jewellery worn by the Pope.
